London is a city with a huge amount of architectural diversity. Being a old city you can still find traditional buildings intertwined with new ones. This is not always a harmonious relationship, some of the 70's designs in particular give a new meaning to the word ugly! However in places it does work and the they do complement each other to an extent. What I like is this the conflict between these structures says alot about the lifestyles of the population that live and work here.
In the past great deals of money were spent on religious symbols of power. This was at a price that can only be compared to the futuristic sky rise office buildings, springing up like daisies wherever you look. To me that says a lot about the state of mind of the world today...our priority is to invest in physical wealth not spiritual wealth.

April 16 ***LONDON STREET LIFE BLOG*** After a few months absence due to one broken camera and a lot of frustration I am back! I've decided to change things a bit from now on and just include pictures that I think sum up London street life to me. As you can see I like to capture the moment and my images are of scenes I stumble across on my travels. Most of the grafitti/vandalism/art (however you view it) in these pictures is here today, gone tomorrow...which to me is the whole beauty of it. My plan is to continue updating this section of my blog with photo's as and when I see the opportunity, of course I've been without a camera for a while so the past week has been spent capturing every idea I've seen over the last few months. Please feel free to leave comments, your criticism is always welcome...good or bad! February 15 Month 4 Week 1
10:10am New shapes in the city
I took this photo this morning of the Willis Building. I've been watching it rise with interest for the last year, mainly because of its strange shape I was intrigue to see how it turned out. I am on the side of putting up these new skyscapers, as long as they look good... after all london is one of the major cities of the world and needs to be dynamic to survive.
20:20pm Grafitti on the train home
When you come to london you will see it everywhere, some can be called art, most is just vandalism. I must admit I'm a bit more open minded about the whole thing than most but I can understand how images like this can really piss people off. I suppose it just part and parcel of city life and the problems that come with it. You're never going to stop it, especially with so many bigger issues to deal with so I guess we are just going to have to get used to these sites. February 05 Month 3 Week 4
1010am It starts to get cold!
What a great morning, I had a week off which was a touch as it snowed for the first time in ages! I hate the snow when I have to work but when your not its a great time to feel like a kid again! To be honest it didn't last long, by lunch time it was already starting to melt. Is it me or are scenes like this becoming rarer and rarer in London... i'm sure its been a while since it last snowed, definately a very long time since it settled for days on end.
2020pm Urban dwellings
Central London is full of council flats like this one, built years ago the government now realise they are a bad idea. They are now a dying breed and most people would agree they'd like to see the back of them. Even so it is an integral part of London and something you can't ignore. This to me signifies London as much as Big Ben and St Pauls Cathedral. Many areas of the suburban heartland of the city look like this, ugly but functional and home to many Londoners.

10:10am The view from a street in Muswell Hill looking East across north London
Muswell Hill has one of the best views of London in London. I think its the biggest, or at least one of the biggest hills in Greater London. Unfortutely this road doesn't look over the usual inner city landmarks such as the millenium wheel etc... they are further to the right. I chose this picture though because I like the street, its typical surburban middle class London, a familiar scene over most of greater London.
20:20pm With my mates on the train to Victoria
I actually took this on my mobile phone, not bad considering. Its got on of those panorama functions that enables you to get a much wider picture than normal. Here you can see Dan, Mike and Dunc with me on our way for a few drinks in central London. January 15 Month 3 Week 2
10:10am The sun comes out in London
As per usual its been rain rain rain of late. I took this picture during a rare occasion when the sun did manage to shine! Just a shadow of an old school lamp post in your typical Central London street.
20:20pm Poker face
Started what turned out to be a mammoth game of poker this evening, the guy in the foreground (Glenn) ended up winning 5 hours later! You can see by the focused expression on his face he's a pretty mean poker player and he ended up taking us all to the cleaners. I don't mind though, he's a good bloke and deserved the win, he played a great game! January 14 Month 3 Week 1
10:10am The morning after the night before
This is a photo of 2 of my mates, Dom and Dunc in walking up a hill in Beckenham Place Park... This was taken at 10:10 on Saturday morning after no sleep and a really heavy night! What they're talking about, only they know!
20:20pm My Station
I had to include a photo of this place as I travel through it almost everyday of my life. From here I can get to Victoria Station, Central London in 30mins and Blackfriars, in The City of London in 35mins. Although everybody complains about london transport its actually not that bad...there I said it! |
